Some horror movies are huge and timeless; e.g. Dracula. Others however are awesome but just don't have the mainstream press to make the average Joe aware of them. I shall offer up my take on a few horror films you should see but probably havent.
1. Dog Soldiers: Werewolves that don't look retarded, Spec Ops fighting said werewolves, good cast (though no one you've ever heard of), great atmosphere. Scottish accents. Watch it.
2. The Haunting: THE haunted house movie. Not the crappy re-make with Liam Neeson that crapped all over the original's story; but the original 1963 movie. Superb acting, great story, awesome atmosphere. For a movie with no f/x what so ever and you never actually SEE a ghost, they are very much there and its scarier because you never really see them.
3. The Legend of Hellhouse: ALMOST a remake of The Haunting, but with enough individuality to seperate it entirely. Excellent movie from the geniuses at Hammer Studios back in the day. Surprisingly no Christopher Lee or Peter Cushing in this, since they were in just about every other Hammer movie. But the movie doesn't suffer from their absence. A very strong cast (including a younger Roddy McDowall who isn't nearly as annoying as he usually is), great atmosphere once again, and a very weird premise that the film makers actually pull off pretty admirably.
4. The Beast of Bray Road: OK this movie is nowhere near the league of the ones already listed. But it's still good. I think in fact it's a Sci-Fi original. But so was Dog Soldiers and it was awesome. And just like Dog Soldiers, this is a werewolf movie. Also this is based on "true" accounts, though they obviously take many creative licenses. I dont really know why I like this movie so much but I do reccomend it; especially if you like werewolf movies. The acting is pretty horrible, the camera work is sub-par; but somewhere underneath it all there is a pretty decent story with a not bad twist and a really cool looking werewolf.
5. I Bury the Living: Wow. More of a thriller than a Horror movie but it's premise pushes it firmly into the realm of horror too. Classic from 1958 and one of my favorites of all time. Very underrated and unknown, but not impossible to find. I can't really describe it without giving away a ton so I'll post the IMDB overview - " A newly appointed cemetery chairman discovers that, merely by inserting a black pin into a wall-sized map of the cemetery, he can cause the deaths of that plot's owner."
Sounds simple enough but there are alot of twists and turns.
So there you go. Check out those movies if you haven't saw them.
And if you know of something cool in the horror world I don't know about please let me know.
