For the uninitiated, BND = Brand New Day. If you don't know what that is head to Wikipedia as it would take way too long to explain. A word of warning this post might have some mild spoilers if you haven't yet read One More Day and Brand New Day up until the latest issue (which would be March 12th 2008).
What can I say? I was a huge Spider-man fan since I first started reading comic books. Other than Captain America, there was no other hero in my mind back then. And that was good because Spidey always delivered. There have been countless creative teams to tackle his books and for the most part they did a pretty darn good job. Granted there were some hiccups (clone saga anyone?) but overall it was good stuff.
Then it seemed that recent years brought on a darker, more Punisher-esque (forgive the made up word) style of writing. While I can't say that the stories had no merit, they just didn't feel quite right. I mean the closing chapters of One More Day were down right brutal. And don't get me wrong; there was some weird, dark satisfaction in seeing Spidey finally unleashing his abilities without inhibitions. But at the same time it gave one the feeling that there was "no going back" so to speak. And I don't think anyone really wants to see a blood-hungry Spider-man.
This being said when I heard the whole concept behind "Brand New Day" I laughed and cried at the same time. I laughed because I thought it was a sure sign Marvel was panicking and didnt know what to do with their franchise character so they were gonna hit the reset button. I cried because I really felt that this might be the death knell in Spidey's legacy. At the very best I expected another Clone Saga tragedy that would kill off interest in Spider-man for years to come.
Thankfully, I was wrong. Though "One More Day" was convoluted and anything but rational, it has set-up a nice, new direction for Spider-man that feels brand new (horrible pun wasn't intended) yet comfortably familiar.
This is only my opinion but Brand New Day in Amazing Spider-man has really delivered. Yes the whole turning continuity on its head is confusing at times, and yes the whole "Marvel hit reset" feeling is inescapable at times, but underneath it all if you ignore those 2 things, there is some really good writing and story-telling going on. Spider-man feels like Spider-man again. And the fact you get a new issue every week (other than once a month) is brilliant!
So even though alot of people (myself included) called Marvel fools for going with this multi-creative team, reset direction; I, at least, take it all back. It's not perfect, but it's working so far. And I have far more interest in Spider-man now than I have in a few years. So they must be doing something right.
