What Happened to Spawn? « Thread Started on Apr 1, 2008, 12:14am »
I just read Spawn #176, and I'm left wondering what happened to this book since McFarlane quit writing and drawing (a loong time ago) it that made it so good? I haven't even read it since then.
Not that I don't like McFarlane as an artist, because he is a good artist, but when Spawn first came out, it seemed like the stories progressively went downhill after the first several issues.
But, after reading this one (Monster in the Bubble, part 1), I have to say the creative team that they have on it are doing a fine job indeed handling old green eyes. It's about a killer, who... well, I can't say much, but it's definitely worth picking up.
The story is by David Hine. Well written with a good plot, and good exposition. The art is unbelievable, considering it contains 22 painted pages, and the artists (Brian Haberlin and Geirrod Van Dyke) actually had to meet a deadline for the book!
Anymore, I have to say that there are some comics that I read about halfway through, and say to myself, "man, this is cheesier than something even I would have written!" And, that's bad.
But, if this book is any indication of the direction the Spawn will be taking in the future, I will be going out of my way to read the series from now on.

hmmm sounds like i'll have to give Spawn another try. I've tried a couple of times in the past to give it another chance but was let down each time. But I think there IS something there in the character that could be woven into a great story. It almost seems like the character is to complicated for anyone to get their mind around. Who would've thought such a character came from the mind of Macfarlane.
Wonder if Grant Morrison got ahold of him what it would be like. Or maybe he has in the past and Im not aware of it.

Yeah, seems like McFarlane wanted so bad to create the ultimate superhero, that he drug the story out forever, and eventually lost my interest.
I have to say this issue was a lot closer to what I always wanted to see the series become, but I wish Spawn was the one playing detective, rather than the guy his angel friend placed a charm on. Either way though, this one was pretty friggin' awesome.
